PAPILLON acrylic on canvas 24×20 abstract impression

Butterflies remind me of my grandfather.   His backyard had  a  flower patch and butterflies loved to visit and stay for long periods of time.  It would be in early spring, usually a  sunny and warm day.  I guess that’s when I started loving flowers and butterflies.  I was four years old.  I remembered my childhood while painting  PAPILLON.

LIFE THAT WON’T STAY STILL acrylic on canvas 14×14 abstract expression

The title of this painting came from my client/friend D.C.  I agreed with him right away when he suggested it,  I had called it still life, this painting hangs on his wall in the  beautiful home that I helped design and build.

Being an interior designer I was always looking for a touch of color or interest on small uninteresting walls. I have painted a number of small  paintings 14×14 and 12×12 for that reason, not only for small areas but  one can bunch them together for a larger  wall.

Everyone needs a little color in their lives, life would be boring without it.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR acrylic on board 24×24 abstract expression

Love has to be one of the most abstract expressions  in life.  Although not easy to define , to me, love is exhilarating, confusing, intense, electrifying.

When you have a white board, paint and brushes and you set out to paint love, you start thinking of the people you love most, your wife, your children,  your mother, father and your friends.  All different kinds  of love, passionate, tender, crazy, platonic.

Some of us are afraid to show love because it makes us vulnerable. Some have had a bad experience and they will not allow anyone else to hurt them, some think that love is a sign of weakness and just don’t know how to express it.

As I get older and wiser, I think love is the most important reason for living.  The people you express love to usually will love you back; which is a great feeling like the song goes ” the greatest thing you’ll ever learn  is to love and be loved in return”.

As you know, I am sure, sometimes Love also works the other way and I will not go into that because this painting is about love.   I would rather think of love as beautiful, happy and caring.   I am the eternal optimist and when I was painting this one I was imagining all the ways I have loved and I realized this painting was not big enough.  Maybe I will use a much bigger canvas for the next one.

In short don’t expect love if you are not willing to love first and show it.   Don’t keep it to yourself, shout it out or paint it out, whichever is easier.

RAINFOREST acrylic on canvas 48×36 abstract expression

Tropical islands are my favorite  places to visit for a week of relaxation, I love swimming and snorkeling in the warm Caribbean waters,  the lush green vegetation and the exotic flowers.

Even though the islands have a lot of similarities, I have had a different experience in each one.  I was inspired by Bora Bora for this painting, I was at the Club Med spending a week with my wife,  we had a  small  bungalow raised above water, it was a beautiful setting.  The food, the fresh bread, the cheese and the wine were great and needless to say I was happy. Life was beautiful and I had a great time.

When I got back I could not wait to express the wonderful experience on canvas,  RAINFOREST was created, I have thought of other titles like Bird of Paradise and a few others but at the end Rainforest was my choice.

Isn’t nature beautiful, it’s  good to be alive.

SUMMERTIME acrylic on board 24×24 abstract expression

Summer is my favorite  season. Everything is easier in summer, no rain, no snow, vacation time, going to the beach, a little swimming, a little fishing, picnics.

I have lived in Toronto Canada, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, winters were hard on me, I used to dream of summer a lot.

When I moved to Southern California, I found the weather that went well with my personality, although you still have different seasons, they are much milder and easy to live with.

George Gershwin’s SUMMERTIME was at my side while painting this one, imagining  the easy living and the fish that were jumping.

Gershwin, what a genius, definitely one of my all time favorite composers.

SUMMER BREEZE acrylic on canvas 48×48 abstract expression

Summer breeze reminds me of  the trade winds in Kauai, the gentle swaying of the palm trees. Every day between  3 to 7pm almost all the hotels have a happy hour usually with music, singer and a hula dancer.

After a wonderful day at the beach I enjoy having a drink listening to the music, watching the hula dance and feel the  trade winds  that sort of caresses  you ever so gently.

Kauai is paradise on earth, this painting brings back  memories  of the time I was there.

FANTASY acrylic on board 24×24 abstract expression

Abstract expression is a feeling that you paint  spontaneously without thought or planning, for me usually music is my inspiration, I paint while music directs my strokes whether  gently or strongly, light colors or dark.

When I finish the painting and am satisfied with the way it looks, I examine  it to  see if it reminds of anything familiar.

Fantasy reminds me of a circus with a high wire dancer. What do you see?

TEMPEST 48×48 acrylic on canvas abstract expression

Stormy weather, violent weather, wind, rain, hail and snow. We get those every so often, although not always in the weather, sometimes in our lives, in our  health. I don’t enjoy it but I expect it.

Life would be boring if the sun shined all the time  and the weather was picture perfect.

Though it would be  rough  on  us  and  those close to us,  look at the silver lining, after a tempest comes a perfect day with sunshine, flowers, butterflies and  even a rainbow.

I guess what I am thinking here is that in our travel through  life we will all have one or more  tempests.  If you think of what follows a stormy weather you will be able to accept both the good and the bad, even if it means that we have arrived to  our  final destination.

It’s alright to be a little late arriving to this appointment, no one will get upset.

MILKY WAY 40×30 acrylic on canvas abstract expression

Luminous band, consisting of innumerable stars indistinguishable to the naked eye, stretching across the sky.

When you consider that earth is probably the size of one tiny dot you wonder about life on all the other stars and planets.

In life,  follow the luminous band and live your life to the fullest.
